You can’t get well as long as you harbor resentment inside. For your own sake, you must let go of the “right” to get even. After being hurt, one of the most difficult decisions is, “Do I want to get well or do I want to get even?” You’re going to have to decide that. You don’t have enough emotional energy to do both.
Getting even will not take away your pain. Maybe you’ve been able to exact some revenge on your offender, but it didn’t solve the problem. The pain is still there. There is only one way to get rid of the pain in your heart when someone’s hurt you. Thee’s only one way: Forgiveness. You’ll never have to forgive another more than God has already forgiven you at the Cross of Christ.
Maybe you’re thinking, “Whoa, hold on there. But they don’t deserve to be forgiven.” You’re right. They don’t deserve to be forgiven. Neither do you deserve to be forgiven, but God forgave you. So, forgive them for your own sake. You can’t go on with life as long as you’re stuck in the past. If you are clinging on to resentment, you’re stuck. That person is still controlling you in the present even though they may have out of your life for years.
“Never pay back evil for evil. Never avenge yourself. Leave that to God. For He has said that He will repay those who deserve it” (Romans 12:17-19).
Trust God to settle the score and balance the books, dear one. He saw the hurt. He’s your vindicator. Leave it to Him, and be free indeed.
